Every market is a microcosm of the environment. For example, this is a study of a Pet Store and life?s lessons inside mall. Each store is a beehive of activity, while using the associated politics, romantic drama and eager achievers that exist in every business and neighborhood. The mall was a reflection of the town, which in turn was an inferior version of the universal economy. Some store personnel would boycott products from other stores or get barter systems for services. Each store managed people profit and loss. Competing stores raged financial warfare with discounts and promotions, while the superpowers shielded their place as anchorman stores at polarized ends of the mall.
So what on earth lessons came from a Pet Store? All with the sales associates earned minimum wage plus a commission for assisted gross sales. All of the associates had the same incentive, claim more customers and claim more sales. The ability to find the money for movie tickets, new clothes or a car payment was the consequence of individual sales technique.

The typical new Pet Store gross sales associate would perch right at the end of the aisles and watch for a customer to linger and look at a product. The stealthy sales associate in a camouflage white smock would probably eagerly pounce upon unsuspecting patrons because they lingered near the dry up dog food. Of course the meals, chew toys and plastic Chihuahua boots had very little value and equally tiny commission. Indeed, the number of commission of such items would not buy a side involving fries. However, the unskilled sales associates quickly figured out the now familiar warfare cry, ?Make it up in volume!

Samsung?s 2012 top-of-the-line plasmas and LED HDTVs offer new features never before available within a television including a built-in, internally wired HD camera, twin microphones, face tracking and speech recognition. While these features give you unprecedented control over an HDTV, the devices themselves, more similar than ever to a personal computer, may allow hackers or even Samsung to see and hear you and your family, and collect extremely personal data.
While Web cameras and Internet connectivity are not new to HDTVs, their complete integration is, and it's the?always connected camera and microphones, combined with the option of third-party apps (not to mention Samsung's own software) gives us cause for concern regarding the privacy of TV buyers and their friends and families.
Samsung has not released a privacy policy clarifying what data it is collecting and sharing with regard to the new TV sets. And while there is no current evidence of any particular security hole or untoward behavior by Samsung's app partners, Samsung has only stated that it "assumes no responsibility, and shall not be liable" in the event that a product or service is not "appropriate."
Samsung demoed these features to the press earlier this month. The camera and microphones are built into the top if the screen bezel in the 2012 8000-series plasmas and are permanently attached to the top of the 7500- and 8000ES-series LED TVs. A Samsung representative showed how, once set up and connected to the Internet, these models will automatically talk to the Samsung cloud and enable viewers to use new and exciting apps.
These Samsung TVs locate and make note of registered viewers via sophisticated?face recognition?software. This means if you tell the TV whose faces belong to which users in your family, it personalizes the experience to each recognized family member. If you have friends over, it could log these faces as well.
In addition, the TV listens and responds to specific voice commands. To use the feature, the microphone is active. What concerns us is the integration of both an?active camera and microphone. A Samsung representative tells us you can deactivate the voice feature; however this is done via software, not a hard switch like the one you use to turn a room light on or off.
And unlike other TVs, which have cameras and microphones as add-on accessories connected by a single, easily removable USB cable, you can't just unplug these sensors.
During our demo, unless the face recognition learning feature was activated, there was no indication as to whether the camera (such as a red light) and audio mics are on. And as far as the microphone is concerned the is no way to physically disconnect it or be assured it is not picking up your voice when you don?t intend it to do so.
Samsung does provide the ability to manually reposition the TV's camera away from viewers. The LED TV models allow you to manually point it upward, facing the ceiling; the plasma?s camera can be re-aimed to capture objects in the rear of the TV according a Samsung spokesperson.
Privacy concerns We began to wonder exactly what data Samsung collects from its new ?eyes and ears? and how it and other companies intend use it, which raises the following questions:
Can Samsung or Samsung-authorized companies watch you watching your Samsung TV?
Do the televisions send a user ID or the TV?s serial number to the Samsung cloud whenever it has an Internet connection?
Does Samsung cross reference a user ID or facial scan to your warranty registration information, such as name, address etc.?
Can a person or company listen to you, at will, via the microphone and Internet connection?
Does Samsung?s cloud store all this information? How secure is this extremely personal data?
Can a hacker intercept this data or view you via the built in camera?
Can a third-party app program do any of the above?
Exactly what information does the TV send to Samsung or other parties?
Does Samsung intend to sell data collected by its Smart TV owners, such as who, what and when one is viewing?
Companies desiring to provide highly targeted advertisements to you via the TV screen or external marketing would find this data extremely valuable. ?Hey, you look a little tired, how about some Ambien? So what, if any, privacy does Samsung promise by way of a stated policy?
Weeks have passed since we formally requested answers to these questions from Samsung asking what if any privacy assurances Samsung provides. To date no privacy statement has been furnished to HD Guru or end users. The first models with these features arrived on dealer?s shelves over two weeks ago. All that we?ve been told is that when connecting to the Internet, the TVs first connect to the Samsung cloud, and from there, they connect to the various streaming video services and other apps for activation.
Samsung induces its new Smart TV owners to register online by offering a free three-month extension of the TV?s warranty. This would couple user names and addresses to their TV serial numbers, if the company so desired.
Want to read the owner?s manual for your new Samsung TV? This is accomplished by download, as Samsung stopped including printed owner?s manuals at least two years ago. However, before you may download the manual, you must first agree to the following online statement:
Samsung assumes no responsibility, and shall not be liable,?in connection with whether any such products or services will be appropriate, functional or supported for the Samsung products or services available in your country.
We asked Samsung to define ?appropriate? but to date have not received a response. We will update readers with a response or a privacy statement if and when Samsung chooses to provide one.
Security threats Don?t assume a TV is an un-hackable island!?Samsung does not disclose what operating system is within its TVs, therefore we cannot confirm if it is Android and/or any other that might have a prior history of hacking.
It has been widely reported Android phones have been?hacked?allowing outside control of phones, via third party apps.
Countless companies have had their networks hacked, causing thousands of customers? personal data to be released to the world. If this were to happen to Samsung it is theoretically possible hackers could gain access to names, addresses -- and?images of the faces of entire families.
The TV has a built-in Facebook app. Can the TV make the next connection and access your Facebook account and match other viewers to their Facebook pictures for even more personal data?
A Samsung representative said the company is working on apps that will allow its Smart TV owners to turn their televisions into a silent home-security system by allowing remote viewing on a smartphone or tablet via the TV?s built-in camera. This ability makes us ask, ?Who else could gain access this video feed??
There are? security systems that go over the Internet, however, many are encrypted. Is any Samsung?s data encrypted? The company doesn't say. Generally security companies let customers know when their data is encrypted, as it is a selling point.
In addition, the Samsung HDTVs come with an external infrared blaster that allows users to control a cable or satellite box via voice, gesture or the Samsung remote. We ask: does the TV send this information over to Samsung?s cloud as well? Does Samsung now know what other equipment you have, when you?re home to use it, what channel you?re viewing and when?
The models with this unprecedented feature set are the 2012 8000 series plasmas PN51E8000, PN60E8000, PN64E8000 and LED models?UN46ES7500, UN50ES7500,?UN55ES7500,?UN46ES8000,?UN55ES8000, UN60ES8000 and UN65ES8000. Many of these models are now at dealers with the rest scheduled to ship within the next few weeks.
With so many questions raised and no answers provided, HD Guru recommends you weigh the possibilities and decide whether or not you care about its unknown personal privacy risks before purchasing one of these HDTVs.

BANGKOK (AP) ? It sounds like the old, military-run Myanmar and not the reform-minded new one: A feared army fires on civilians indiscriminately, razes homes and rapes women while the government prevents international aid from reaching tens of thousands of displaced survivors.
A Human Rights Watch report released Tuesday says violence and rights abuses have not abated in Myanmar's northern Kachin state despite unprecedented reforms made by the post-junta government in the Southeast Asian country, also known as Burma.
"There's still a long way to go before the people of Burma, particularly those in conflict areas, benefit from recent promises of reform," said Elaine Pearson, deputy Asia director at Human Rights Watch. "The international community should not become complacent about the serious human rights violations still plaguing" the country, she said.
The dire situation in the remote region near the Chinese border casts a shadow over the government's avowed commitment to democratic change as it seeks an end to Western sanctions and a greater international acceptance after years as a pariah state.
After half a century of military rule, Myanmar's army ceded power last year to a nominally civilian government dominated by retired army officers and members of the former regime. Since then, President Thein Sein has surprised Western governments by making several dramatic changes, including opening up next month's by-elections to the opposition, releasing hundreds of political prisoners, signing truces with rebel groups and easing restrictions on the media.
But the fighting in Kachin state, which resumed after nearly two decades last June, stands in stark contrast to those widely praised developments. Skirmishes have continued despite a call by Thein Sein for the army to cease fire and repeated efforts to negotiate a peaceful settlement.
Ye Htut, a government spokesman, said he could not comment on the report because he had not seen it. But he said Thein Sein had ordered an end to army offensives in Kachin to placate violence in the region. He acknowledged sporadic clashes but said army troops were being attacked and "had the right to defend themselves."
Human Rights Watch documented unlawful killings and said soldiers have threatened and tortured civilians during interrogations for information about insurgents. It said the army has forced men as old as 70 to carry out manual labor at gunpoint, and conscripted teens as young as 14 to fight on the front line.
Troops have also "deliberately and indiscriminately fired on Kachin civilians with small arms and mortars," sometimes simply to force people to flee, the rights group said.
Human Rights Watch staff traveled to Kachin state twice in the second half of 2011, visiting nine displaced camps and interviewing more than 100 people, including one man forcibly held as a porter by soldiers for 19 days. The man, identified as "M. Seng," also said he witnessed two women being raped repeatedly.
"Soldiers would come and take the women and bring them from tent to tent," the rights group quoted him as saying. "We were so afraid and we couldn't watch the whole night. The next morning, the women couldn't walk right ... They walked hunched over. And they were crying."
The New York-based rights watchdog also said Kachin rebels, known as the Kachin Independence Army, are using child soldiers and planting land mines.
So far, the conflict has displaced 75,000 people, leaving many in desperate need of food, medicine and shelter. But delivering international aid to affected regions in rebel-controlled territory has proven extraordinarily difficult.
The government has granted U.N. agencies access to the area only once, in December, when two trucks delivered shelter supplies. They were not able to visit the entire area and have not been allowed to return, Human Rights Watch said.
The aid shortfall "has pressured families to return to insecure villages in order to gather belongings or tend to animals and fields, risking encounters with hostile Burmese army forces and exposing them to anti-personnel mines that have been laid by both parties," Human Rights Watch said.
"Burmese army soldiers have fired upon civilians, including children, threatened them, and abducted them for forced labor. Many villagers have returned home only to find that the army has already destroyed or confiscated their property and belongings."
Aid groups also are concerned their requests to help in the conflict zone could imperil their officially sanctioned aid projects elsewhere in the country, the report said.
"It is essential that support for recent reforms not lead to international complacency about the serious human rights violations still plaguing Burma," the report said. "Legal and political changes are only beginning to make headway and there is a long way to go before all Burmese benefit from them."
Thanks to research by a University of Cincinnati undergraduate student and two team members, there's a new tool that's now been tested and found to work in continuously recording the habits of snakes.
This small-scale study is the first-ever use of Lotek Archival Tags (LATs) on snakes, since the LAT devices were originally developed for use in avian and fish species due to LATs' ability to measure temperature and pressure ? measuring pressure translates into altitude and depth.
UC's Lauren Flick, a triple-major pursuing simultaneous undergraduate degrees in biology, psychology and criminal justice, will present the findings of the snapshot study, "Comparing the Effectiveness of Lotek Archival Tags (LATs) in a Behavioral Study of the Lake Erie Water Snake," at the March 23-25 Midwest Ecology and Evolution Conference, a conference specifically for undergraduate and graduate student research that will draw representatives from regional schools.
Participating in the study with Flick were lead researcher Kristen Stanford, a doctoral student at Northern Illinois University and recovery plan coordinator for the Lake Erie water snake, and Lindsey Korfel, a student at Wittenberg University. Their research study was conducted during summer 2011 at Ohio State University's Stone Laboratory located on Lake Erie.
A tool beyond a traditional radio transmitter
The traditional manner for tracking snakes' movements is primarily with a radio transmitter. In other words, a researcher would attach a location transmitter to a ground snake and then hope he or she could then stay or get within range over a period of time to visually determine its habits.
What Flick, Stanford and Korfel did was to catch two female Lake Erie water snakes (LEWS) and arrange for the implantation of LATs. Importantly, the LATs record and store data on the snakes over time, such that it's not necessary for a researcher to be within visual range of the snake. In fact, a researcher could leave the snake undisturbed in its natural habits and environment for days, even weeks, at a time when using a LAT. (During this study, the snakes were not harmed, and the LATs were removed at the end of the study.)
"This was proof of concept that use of LATs in reptiles is a viable research method," said Flick, a resident of Cincinnati's Green Hills community. "For a study like ours, it's harder and less effective to rely solely on using the traditional radio transmitter on a water snake moving in the depths of the Great Lakes. And even when using the average transmitter with a ground snake, you have to stay within about 50 meters for the tracking technology to work. That kind of close tracking could also serve to disturb the very habits a researcher is hoping to observe."
Lending support to the Lake Erie Water Snake in the fight against the invasive round gobi fish
The Lake Erie Water Snake (LEWS), found only in the western Lake Erie waters of Ohio and Canada and only recently removed from the list of federally endangered and threatened species, is estimated to number more than 8,000 adults. Its population size had fallen to about 1,500 adults in the mid-1990s ? very low because they were often killed by humans and because of loss or degradation of habitat on the shoreline or on the Lake Erie islands where they are native.
Explained Flick, "Basically, the islands and shorelines are an important part of the snakes' habitat. They live on land and only forage in the water. Humans on the Lake Erie islands didn't, for a long time, see value in having snakes around, even though we now know that these nonpoisonous snakes were and are a valuable part of the ecosystem."
And while those numbers have recovered sufficiently to remove the species from the endangered status, it's important to understand how the species is faring in terms of foraging, maintaining body temperature and finding appropriate mating, resting and hibernating environments because the LEWS are a major player in combating the invasive round gobi fish.
The round gobies, a bottom-dwelling species, are considered very harmful because they are voracious nest predators of many of Lake Erie's native game fish and bottom-dwelling fish, and there are now estimated to be billions of the round gobies in Lake Erie. However, as it turns out, the native Lake Erie water snakes will eat round gobies.
And even though the student research was a snapshot involving just a pair of snakes, they found some intriguing results recorded by the LAT devices.
Said Flick, "Previous studies have estimated that the LEWS spend only 7 percent of the time foraging for food. The snakes that we studied actually spent 20-25 percent of the time foraging. One of the snakes even went out foraging at about midnight, which is unusual because the LEWS are not normally nocturnal."
And since it's estimated that 90 percent of the LEWS' diet consists of round gobi fish, more time eating by the LEWS should translate into fewer round gobies.

Many of Integrity?s members and supporters are lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) parents, and children of those fine parents. We urge you to support and co-sponsor this important legislation, which would help ensure that every child can have a loving, stable home.Of the 408,000 children in the U.S. foster care system, 107,000 of whom are waiting to be adopted, 27,000 children will leave the system without ever finding a home because of a lack of adoptive parents, according to the ?Department of Health and Human Services. This represents a colossal system failure, since there are two million potential LGBT parents who would consider adopting from the public system if they were not obstructed by state policies, practices, and procedures.While a few states have laws or policies prohibiting discrimination, most do not. Several states havespecifically excluded LGBT people from acting as foster parents or adopting. The law in many states remains silent on these issues, leaving children and potential parents open to decisions based on bias rather than the interests of children. LGBT people and their partners, whether in opposite-gender or same-gender relationships and whether married or unmarried, frequently face this kind of discrimination. The Every Child Deserves a Family Act would prohibit discrimination in public adoption and foster care placements on the basis of gender identity, sexual orientation, or marital status.Scientists and child welfare experts have agreed for decades that children raised by LGBT parents fare just as well as others when it comes to healthy development and psychosocial adjustment. It is clear today that public agencies should focus on placing all children in permanent, loving homes, and not on the sexual orientation, gender identity, or marital status of parents.For all those thousands of children who today are awaiting a forever home, I hope you will consider lending your support and becoming a co-sponsor of the Every Child Deserves a Family Act.
