Altec Lansing A1 Custom Single Driver Earphone

Recently, Altec Lansing partnered with ACS Custom, a British earphone and musician monitor manufacturer, to design its first line of custom-molded earphones. The result is a three earphone lineup, topping out at $999.95, and starting at $499.95 (direct) with the Altec Lansing A1 Custom Single Driver Earphone. The key differentiator between the Altec Lansing custom series and competing custom in-ear monitors from Ultimate Ears and JH Audio is the smaller, medical-grade silicone earpiece. Altec's earpiece material choice brings obvious comfort advantages, but also less obvious annoyances. As for the sound signature, the A1 is a beautiful-sounding, flat response pair that neither exaggerates bass response nor ignores it. Unfortunately, at high volumes on deep bass tracks, the A1 distorts slightly?not a deal-breaker, but still surprising given the high price-range.

Design?
The design of the A1 is about as simple and unadorned as it gets, lacking any logos on the earphones. A black cable, with no iPhone controls or microphone, extends from the dark gray, translucent-silicone earpieces. The A1's cable extends upwards, over the top of the ear and behind it, and terminates in a 3.5mm connection. The earphones ship with a hard case, an earwax cleaning tool, a tube of comfort cream (which helps create a more comfortable seal), and a protective pouch.

As with all custom-molded pairs, the A1 requires a visit to an audiologist?Altec will connect you with one once you place your order. The audiologist will create molds of your ear canal and then send them on their way for the manufacturing process.

Altec Lansing isn't the first company to offer soft custom ear-molds. ACS, the company's partner for the custom series, has been doing it successfully overseas for some time now and Etymotic, the flat response earphone specialists, now offer a $100 custom-earpiece upgrade for nearly all of its models.

The earpieces for the A1 are quite small, and unlike the A2 and A3, which respectively house two and three drivers, the A1 only utilizes one balanced armature driver. Obviously, this means that less of the ear is obstructed, but since the ear canal is still sealed off completely, the passive noise reduction is still quite significant at approximately 27dB?these are basically earplugs with earphones built-in. The soft silicone is also quite comfortable, even for long listening sessions, though the smaller earpieces are a bit more difficult to put in your ears properly than larger pairs. The silicone eventually warms to your body temperature and expands slightly in the ear canal, helping maintain a perfect seal. One weird downside to the soft silicone: It acts like a magnet for everything from dust particles to pet hair. I found myself wiping them clean nearly every time I put them in, so it's a good idea to make use of the protective pouch to keep them as dust-free as possible.

One particularly annoying design move is the lack of a detachable cable. Unlike, say, the JH Audio JH16 Pro ($1,149, 5 stars), a far more expensive custom model, or the Shure SE215 ($119, 4 stars), a far less expensive model that isn't even custom-molded, the A1's cable is hardwired. So if the cable gets gnarled or damaged, the earphones must go in for repair. However, the cable is at least reinforced with Kevlar, and seems both stronger than the average headphone cable and less affected by low temperatures.

Performance
Audiophiles who prefer less exaggerated bass frequencies and a generally flat response will enjoy the sound signature of the A1. Like the Etymotic ER-4PT ($299, 4.5 stars), the emphasis here is on clarity in the mids and highs. Low frequencies exist, but subtly. On songs with tremendously deep bass, like The Knife's "Silent Shout," the A1 still adequately covers the sub-bass frequencies, but not with the kind of boosted response that is common in modern earphones. Unfortunately, at high volumes, there is minor distortion on deep bass tracks. Granted, it isn't advisable to listen at such high levels, but earphones in this price range should not distort when used with an iPhone or a laptop.

On classical tracks, like John Adams' "The Chairman Dances," the low-end response takes a backseat to the articulate, crisp presence of the mids, highlighting the attack of middle- and high-register stringed instruments, as well as brighter percussion. Still when a large drum is hit, you definitely experience a fullness in the bass response?it just isn't overdone. The experience is a nice approximation of what you might actually hear in a concert hall when listening to the same piece.

Altec Lansing's clinical approach to audio puts the A1 clearly in the camp of Etymotic and less so with bass-heavy offerings from JH Audio and Ultimate Ears, like the similarly priced, Editors' Choice UE 4 Pro ($399, 4.5 stars). Musicians and music lovers seeking more bass response should probably steer clear of the A1, but fans of flat response and articulate highs will be pleased. Thus far in the custom realm, there just aren't any bad options, only different sound signatures and fits. It's advisable to read all of our custom in-ear reviews from JH Audio, Ultimate Ears, and our reviews of Etymotic pairs with custom-fit options before settling on the A1 or any other pair.

Former New Mexico Governor to run for president as Libertarian

By The Associated Press

Former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson, a longshot candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, said Wednesday he is leaving the GOP in favor of running as a Libertarian.

Johnson told a news conference at the state Capitol that the decision was difficult, but that he was "deeply disappointed" by the treatment he received in the Republican nomination process.

"I had hoped to lay out a real libertarian message on all the issues in the Republican contest. The process was not fair and open," he said.

Johnson has been excluded from all but two GOP presidential debates. He also has barely registered in the polls.

The former two-term governor said that if he earns the Libertarian Party's presidential nomination, he will appear on the ballots in all 50 states and will not be "held hostage to a system rigged for the wealthiest and best-known candidates in a handful of states who happen to have early primaries."

Johnson is fiscally conservative but supports legalizing marijuana and abortion rights.

He laid out an agenda that also includes ending deficit spending and cutting federal spending by 43 percent. He called for ending gun control, ending expensive foreign wars, cutting over-regulation and legalizing gay marriage.

"I believe this election needs a true libertarian voice," he said. "While Ron Paul is a good man and a libertarian who I proudly endorsed for president in 2008, there is no guarantee that he will be the Republican nominee."

Japan eases ban on weapons exports to lower costs (AP)

TOKYO ? Japan is easing its decades-long arms export ban in a bid to lower purchase and production costs fro weapons and take part in global arms projects.

Top government spokesman Osamu Fujimura said Tuesday that the new rules will allow Japan to jointly develop and sell arms with other countries. Japan already has eased the ban in projects with the United States, its biggest ally. The latest change extends the exception to other defense partners, including European nations and Australia.

The exception to the arms export ban dating back to 1967 applies only to projects contributing to Japan's security and global peace. Fujimura said Japan maintains its pacifist principles prohibiting arms use in global conflicts.

Toledo tops Air Force 42-41 in wild Military Bowl shootout

WASHINGTON D.C.???If you like offense, the 25,042 fans in RFK Stadium were treated to a special afternoon Wednesday by Air Force and Toledo. The Falcons and Rockets ran up and down the field with little opposition.

But, in the end, Toledo held on for a 42-41 victory in the Military Bowl after Air Force gambled trying for a two-point conversion with 52 seconds left. The Falcons' David Baska, the holder on the fake conversion, pitched wildly to Parker Herrington, who couldn't corral the ball on an option play to the left. The ball bounced out of bounds in the end zone. Air Force then tried an onside kick, but Toledo recovered and ran out the clock.

Toledo scored first and never trailed in a wild back-and-forth

contest, as Air Force kept putting the pressure on.

The Rockets' defense pinned Air Force in its territory for much of the fourth quarter. A 33-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Terrance Owens to receiver Bernard Reedy put Toledo ahead, 42-35, with 5:01 to go. But, as they did all game, the Falcons responded, scoring on a fourth-down pass from quarterback Tim Jefferson to a wide-open Zach Kauth to make it 42-41. Coach Troy Calhoun then called for the fake conversion.

There were many bowl-game highs for the Falcons. Jefferson's touchdown pass to Jonathan Warzeka in the second quarter was his first in four postseason games.

Toledo coach Matt Campbell deserted his two-quarterback system most of the way. He stayed mainly with Owens, and the sophomore left-hander delivered with big plays.

Air Force scored late in the second quarter to tied the game at 28. The Rockets took a 35-28 lead on Jermaine Robinson's 37-yard interception return of a tipped pass. The Falcons tied the score at 35 on fullback Mike DeWitt's two-yard slant to the left side later in the period.

There was hardly time to catch a breath in the first half.

The Rockets and Falcons moved up and down the field in just about

every way imaginable, from big kick returns, to long runs to big passing plays. Toledo's 87-yard kickoff return by Eric Paige with 2:17 left in the first period put the Rockets up 21-7. By that point the Falcons already had given up a 17-yard touchdown pass by Owens and a 41-yard touchdown run by Thomas.

But, as if an alarm had gone off, the Falcons woke up.

Jefferson signaled there was some life with a 22-yard scoring run that made it 14-7 before the kickoff return by Page. The Falcons scored three times in the second quarter to knot the game by halftime.

Tailback Asher Clark scored from the one on fourth down to tie the score at 21. After Owens hit a 49-yard touchdown pass to put the Rockets up 28-21, Jefferson threw a 37-yard score to Warzeka with 2:07 left in the period.

Boys Basketball: Influential club coach Mac Irvin dies at 74

Story ImageMac Irvin (left) with his son Mac Irvin Jr.
December 24, 2011 6:32PM

Updated: December 24, 2011 8:18PM

McGlother "Mac" Irvin turned a small South Side basketball program, the Mac Irvin Fire, into a nationally recognized powerhouse. His influence and charisma earned him a nickname so well established that public-address announcers in gyms across Chicago would proclaim his entrance: "The Godfather is in the building."

Mr. Irvin, 74, died Saturday at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. Irvin was a diabetic and had been suffering from various complications since July.

"We lost a giant here in the city of Chicago," said Sonny Parker, a former NBA player who played for and coached with Irvin. "He has touched all of us. We don't have a replacement for him."

Mr. Irvin played basketball at Tilden High School and was a longtime executive at Xerox. He started working in South Side basketball programs in the early 1970s and eventually built his club program into the most dominant in the city and one of the most well-known in the country. Irvin retired from Xerox in 1992 and was hired by Sonny Vaccaro and Adidas as a consultant. From then on, his influence and reputation grew.

"He was very positive, very uplifting," Parker said. "Everyone respected him in our community. I guess that's why they called him the godfather. He loved people. He was that type of person."

Irvin's influence on the Chicago basketball scene in the last 30 years was monumental. He mentored two generations of basketball players, dozens of whom went on to play professionally, including Antoine Walker, Melvin Ely and Juwan Howard.

"Mac Irvin has always been a prominent figure in the high school basketball community," said Chicago Public Schools sports director Calvin Davis. "He has coached some of the best talent in the country. We will miss him greatly."

Irvin is survived by his wife, Louise, seven children and eight grandchildren.

"There has never been a nicer and more influential person [than Mac Irvin] for the benefit of kids that I have ever met in my entire life," Sonny Vaccaro said. "What he was able to do for the people in Chicago, and kids across the country, is unparalleled. He helped everyone. There are so few people with the heart of a Mac Irvin, he was truly about the kids."

All of Irvin's children are involved with basketball or education in some way. His daughter Cindy works for the board of education; Lance is an assistant college basketball coach; Byron is an NBA agent; Nick is the coach at Morgan Park; Mac Jr. runs the Lady Fire; and Mike runs the Mac Irvin Fire and is a major presence in the city's social scene.

"He was everything to Chicago," Nick said. "He was our father, but he was a father figure to so many other kids in Chicago. Our house was open to one and all. My family and I will continue to try to carry on the legacy that he has set."

UK's Queen visits Prince Philip after heart scare (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? Queen Elizabeth visited her 90-year-old husband Prince Philip in hospital on Saturday where Britain's longest-serving royal consort was recovering from surgery to ease chest pains he had suffered in the days before Christmas.

Buckingham Palace said the operation to clear a blocked heart artery was a success, but Philip appeared bound to miss much of the royals' Christmas celebrations at their rural Sandringham estate.

Heir-to-the-throne Prince Charles and siblings Prince Edward, Prince Andrew and Princess Anne also visited Papworth hospital near Cambridge to see their recuperating father, who said this year he wanted to wind down some of his royal duties.

"Prince Philip was in good spirits," a spokeswoman for Buckingham Palace said, describing the visits. "He will remain in hospital under observation for a short period."

Philip had been preparing to enjoy Christmas with his family - including grandson Prince William and his new wife Catherine - at Sandringham in east England, with an exchange of gifts on Christmas Eve and a Boxing Day shoot among the highlights.

The Duke of Edinburgh, known for his outspoken and sometimes brusque manner, has had a hectic year of engagements in 2011 including the wedding of William and Catherine, entertaining U.S. President Barack Obama and a trip to Australia.

There will be little chance to rest in 2012 when 85-year-old Elizabeth, whose annual Christmas Day address will focus on the importance of family, celebrates her 60th year on the throne with a tour of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

BLOCKED ARTERY

Philip, who married Elizabeth in 1947, was taken to Papworth, one of Britain's main heart and chest centers, about 60 miles away near Cambridge, late on Friday.

"The Duke of Edinburgh was found to have a blocked coronary artery which caused his chest pains," the palace said. "This was treated successfully by the minimally invasive procedure of coronary stenting."

The minor operation involves using a catheter to insert small tube into the artery to clear any blockages.

Philip had attended a lunch for staff a week ago and had been on "very good form," the BBC said.

"He has had these chest pains before and I don't think it's anything untoward, but given his age they are being safe rather than sorry," former royal press spokesman Dickie Arbiter said.

Despite his age, Philip has been in generally robust health this year, ploughing through a busy array of charity work and social engagements.

A pivotal figure in the House of Windsor, he has a reputation as a fiercely loyal consort who prefers outdoor pursuits to introspection.

However, in a BBC interview to mark his 90th birthday in June he said he was hoping for a quieter life in older age.

"I reckon I've done my bit," he said. "I want to enjoy myself a bit now with less responsibility, less frantic rushing about, less preparation, less trying to think of something to say."

Britain's tabloid newspapers have delighted over the years in recounting his many public gaffes.

He once told British students in China: "If you stay here much longer, you'll be slitty-eyed."

Born on the Greek island of Corfu in 1921, Philip served in Britain's Royal Navy before marrying Elizabeth. They have four children, including the heir to the throne, Charles.

Eric Schmidt: High-quality Google Tablet Coming in Six Months

Soon Google could show tablet makers like ASUS, HTC, Lenovo, and Motorola how a real?Android tablet is made. During an interview with an Italian newspaper this week, Eric Schmidt, Google?s Executive Chairman, mentioned plans ?to market a tablet of the highest quality?.

The idea sounds similar to Google?s Nexus line of smartphones. Google typically helms the designs of those devices, and the final products are usually treated as the ideal pairing of hardware with Android software.?

Though the often-talkative Schmidt says little else along the lines of confirmed plans, he does give the tablet a six month window. The rest of the article finds Schmidt waxing on the nature of capitalism and the spirit of competition between Apple and Google, as well as American tech makers taking on new products from manufacturers in Europe and Asia.

Haimen, China, Protests: Tear Gas Fired At Protesters

BEIJING -- Riot police in a southern Chinese coastal town fired tear gas Friday at protesters, including elderly men and women, on the fourth day of unrest over a planned power plant expansion, according to protesters' accounts and TV footage.

Police and protesters in the town of Haimen squared off near a highway entrance that has become the focal point for protests this week, with residents demanding that authorities release an unknown number of demonstrators.

The town's elders knelt on the road facing a barricade set up by riot police with helmets and shields several hundred yards (meters) away while others lit large incense sticks and planted them into a plastic foam makeshift altar, a protester said by phone.

"They were begging the police to release those people that they've detained and praying that the riot police can see things more clearly," the 20-year-old saleswoman surnamed Yao told The Associated Press by phone.

Haimen's protesters are demanding a halt to the planned expansion of a coal-fired power plant which they say has contributed to what they say is a rise in cancer cases and heavy pollution in the seas, a serious problem for a town where many make their living from fishing.

The protests started Tuesday when thousands of people besieged a Haimen government office and blocked a highway. When riot police used tear gas in an attempt to disperse them, demonstrators hurled rocks, water bottles and bricks in return. Clashes broke out, injuring an unknown number of protesters and police, residents say.

In response to the protests, the local government said Tuesday that it would temporarily suspend the power plant project, the official Xinhua News Agency said.

But protesters say they have not heard directly from authorities on the matter and say several protesters in their teens or early 20s had been detained.

Many of the protesters waved red plastic bags meant to signify red scarves worn by children as part of their school uniforms, photos from the scene showed.

They held up banners saying "Release the people," "Defend our home" and "Oppose construction of power plant."

It was not immediately clear how many people have been taken into police custody, but Xinhua said Thursday that five people had been detained by Wednesday for vandalism during the protests.

Earlier in the day, police fired tear gas at the protesters, said another protester, a man surnamed Lin.

"When they saw that more and more people had come to protest, they fired the tear gas to try to chase us away. At the same time, a big gust of wind blew toward us, so we all had to run," Lin said. "My tears ran continuously. Our eyes are all red."

This is the third time police have used tear gas to disperse protesters in Haimen this week.

"We have no weapons at all. All we are doing is standing here and protesting," Lin added.

Hong Kong's Cable TV showed footage of tear gas clouds being blown toward protesters, scattering the crowd of hundreds of people. Riot police with helmets and shields had formed a blockade at the entrance to the highway.

After three decades of laxly regulated industrialization, China is seeing a surge in protests over such environmental worries.

In September, hundreds of villagers in an eastern Chinese city near Shanghai demonstrated against pollution they blamed on a solar panel factory. In August, 12,000 residents in the northeastern port city of Dalian protested against a chemical plant after waves from a tropical storm broke a dike guarding the plant and raised fears that flood waters could release toxic chemicals.

Director of Public Health Jean-Pierre Grall, right, Public Health officials Annie Podeur, center, and Jean-Claude Ghislain, left, participate in a media conference in Paris, Friday, Dec. 23, 2011. Tens of thousands of women with risky, French-made breast implants should have them removed at the state's expense, the health minister recommended Friday, adding that such removals were "preventive" and not urgent. While implants made by Poly Implant Prothese, or PIP, have not been linked to an increased incidence of cancer, the risk that they could rupture and leak a questionable type of silicone gel has been shown, Xavier Bertrand said in a statement. (AP) ? Tens of thousands of women with risky, French-made breast implants should have them removed at the state's expense, France's health minister recommended Friday, in an unprecedented move that could have implications across Europe and South America.

Xavier Bertrand said the mass removals were "preventive" and not urgent, and French health officials said analyses so far have found no link between the pre-filled silicone gel implants and nine cases of cancer among women implanted with them.

But Bertrand, in a statement, cited an unusually high risk that the implants could rupture and leak a questionable type of silicone gel into the wearer's body.

Health authorities in Britain ? where even more women have the implants than in France ? said Friday that for now they see no reason to take similar action.

Questions remain about the logistics and final costs of the removals. Francois Godineau, a top official in the French national health service, estimated it could deplete French government coffers by euro60 million ($78 million) at a time when the country is teetering on a brink of a new recession and struggling to tame state debt.

Investigators say the company Poly Implant Prothese used cheaper industrial silicone for the implants instead of medical silicone to save money. The implants were pulled from the market last year and the company is being liquidated.

"As a preventive measure not of an urgent nature, (French authorities) recommend that the removal of these implants, even those not showing signs of deterioration, be proposed," the statement said. It added that the costs of removal would be footed by France's national health care system ? presumably solely for French patients.

One reason for the drastic measure is the uncertainty about the contents of the silicone gel used and the risks it poses to internal organs. Also, standard mammograms and ultrasounds do not always indicate that an implant has ruptured, and many women may be walking around unknowingly with burst implants.

Some 30,000 of women in France, and tens of thousands more in Britain, Italy, Spain, Portugal and other countries in Europe and South America have had implants made by PIP. The implants in question were not sold in the U.S.

All breast implants are subject to rupture, especially as they get older, and patients are meant to be informed of the risks before getting them put in.

But "these implants have a particular fragility" and appear to pose risks of rupture earlier in their life spans than other implants, Jean-Claude Ghislain of French health agency AFSSAPS, told a news conference Friday.

Removal of the implants can require general anesthesia and other risks associated with major surgery. The government recommendations say women who don't want to get them removed should be examined every six months.

Leading French plastic surgeons had been urging the government to act. The death last month of a woman who had the implants and developed a rare cancer catalyzed worries.

Annie Mesnil, who had a PIP implant to replace a breast removed after cancer in 1999, said she was relieved that the Health Ministry "accepts the idea that there is a potential danger."

But, she added, "It's not enough. They will pay for the removal of the implants, but they will not pay for the replacements."

France's state health care system normally pays for implants for medical reasons, but not for cosmetic implants. About 80 percent of those with the PIP silicone implants have them for esthetic reasons.

After the PIP product was recalled last year, a mammogram and ultrasound did not reveal any problem with Mesnil's implant. But Mesnil, 62, had it removed anyway, at her own expense, out of fear. When her surgeon took it out and studied it, "he discovered it had already burst," she said.

Chantal Guerin, a 46-year-old accountant and mother of three, had her left breast removed after cancer and had PIP implants put in both breasts. In 2010, she developed cancer in her right breast.

"One cannot directly incriminate the implant, since there is no scientific proof," she said in an interview. "But we have the right to ask ourselves a lot of questions, because there is a great amount of physical pain involved."

She insisted that women who have implants for cosmetic reasons should also be protected by government health care.

Following the French announcement, Britain's Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency said it was still not recommending that women in Britain have the implants removed. The agency says up to 40,000 women in Britain may have had the implants.

"We recognize the concern that some women who have these implants may be feeling but we currently have no evidence of any increase in incidents of cancer associated with these implants and no evidence of any disproportionate rupture rates other than in France," it said in a statement.

"We therefore do not believe that the associated risks of surgery from breast implant removal can be justified without further evidence."

In the U.S., concerns about silicone gel implants in general led to a 14-year ban on their use. Silicone implants were brought back to the market in the U.S. 2006 after research ruled out cancer, lupus and some other concerns.

Pats ensure Broncos run out of miracle rallies

New England's 41-23 win halts Denver's win streak at six games

updated 7:28 p.m. ET Dec. 18, 2011

DENVER - Tom Brady and the New England Patriots shut down Tim Tebow and clinched a playoff berth with a 41-23 victory over the Denver Broncos on Sunday.

The Patriots (11-3) won their sixth straight game and another AFC East title by bouncing back from an early 17-6 deficit and an awful first quarter in which they were outgained on the ground 167 yards to 4.

This time, there was no last-minute magic from Tebow, Denver's enigmatic quarterback who had guided the Broncos (8-6) to four straight fourth-quarter comebacks and six straight wins.

Instead of another slow start followed by a fantastic finish, the Broncos started out fast and then fizzled. They scored on their first three possessions and then were done in by a trio of second-quarter turnovers.

ESPN hopes Braud, Dodd stories turn tide (AP)

NEW YORK ? ESPN's news-making coverage this past week on baseball MVP Ryan Braun and another alleged case of sexual abuse by a sports figure are a boost and, no doubt, relief to the network's journalists after a tough month.

Critics roughed up the sports network for its handling of abuse stories involving former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky and ex-Syracuse basketball assistant Bernie Fine. And some in sports wonder whether a network that pays millions of dollars in rights fees to televise sports events can critically report controversial sports stories. ESPN says it can.

"There is some impetus to do more enterprise and investigative reporting," said Vince Doria, ESPN's vice president and director of news. "That's an important area for the company."

ESPN broke the story on Saturday that Milwaukee Brewers slugger and reigning National League MVP Braun had tested positive for a substance banned by baseball and is fighting to avoid a 50-game suspension.

A day earlier, ESPN's Tom Farrey reported that two former youth basketball players accused ex-Amateur Athletic Union president Robert "Bobby" Dodd of molesting them as children. One of the accusers, Ralph West, said he came to ESPN after reading the grand jury allegations against Sandusky and sought out Farrey because of a book the reporter wrote on amateur athletics.

Most in-depth or investigative reporting on ESPN is featured on either the daily show "Outside the Lines," particularly its weekend edition, or the occasional series "E:60," which focuses on longer-form, off the news storytelling.

The network just hired Don Van Atta Jr., a former New York Times investigative reporter. Among its other prominent reporters are Mark Fainaru-Wada, who wrote "Game of Shadows" about steroid charges against Barry Bonds, former New York Daily News reporter T.J. Quinn and Paula Lavigne, who has looked into health issues in sports. Ten journalists are specifically assigned to ESPN's enterprise unit, with another four attached to "E:60."

Both breaking news and investigative reporting efforts were faulted in ESPN's response to the Sandusky and Fine stories.

In the days after the lurid grand jury report that made Sandusky a household name, ESPN was criticized for being slow to grasp the story's significance and follow up on its threads. Sara Ganim, a reporter from the Patriot-News in Harrisburg, Pa., was widely regarded as the toughest and most aggressive reporter on the story.

It took three days before ESPN "finally seemed consistently to ask the right questions and find the appropriate moral outrage," wrote Jason Fry and Kelly McBride of the journalism think tank the Poynter Institute. Both are working as ESPN ombudsmen. Some of ESPN's early coverage, such as a blog post that discussed how the scandal would affect Penn State's football recruiting, seemed ill-timed considering the more important questions about damaged youths, they noted.

"This was a story that I don't think anyone terribly distinguished themselves on, with the exception of Sara Ganim," Doria said.

He believes perceptions rather than reality fueled some of the impressions. For example, ESPN had several reporters on the scene, but seemed flatfooted when it didn't have a truck able to feed live pictures when students spontaneously protested head coach Joe Paterno's firing, in contrast to some cable news networks, he said.

ESPN was first on the air with a story about molestation allegations against Syracuse's Fine. As the story developed, more people wondered why ESPN wasn't reporting on the charges eight years earlier.

The network in 2003 investigated a former Syracuse ball boy's claims against Fine. Like the Syracuse Post Standard, which was looking into the same charges, the story wasn't reported at the time because no one backed up the charges. Both organizations went public in 2011 when a second person told his own story of alleged abuse. It also came to light that ESPN had for years a tape of Fine's wife discussing the alleged abuse with the first accuser, although with a lack of specificity.

Critics, including the ombudsmen, suggested ESPN gave up pursuing the initial story too quickly ? a decision that could have serious implications if alleged abuse continued in the intervening years.

"We do not believe that ESPN acted with gross negligence," Fry and McBride wrote, "but rather a lack of persistence."

Doria concedes ESPN acted cautiously following the Fine story, primarily because of the seriousness of the allegations and the damage that could be done if the ball boy's story proved to be untrue. Whether more could have been done with the audio recording is a fair discussion to have, he said.

"We get a lot of scrutiny," he said. "Some of it is fair scrutiny, thoughtful scrutiny, well-intentioned scrutiny. Some of it, not so much. I would ask them to look at our record."

Tom Scocca, managing editor of the sports website Deadspin, was sharply critical of ESPN's coverage in these cases. He also questions the extent to which ESPN can cover issues where it has a clear financial interest, such as the ongoing realignment in college sports conferences, driven primarily by television money.

ESPN can do a good job looking into NCAA violations at specific sports programs, but Scocca wondered if the network would it want to take a comprehensive look at whether major college sports are corrupt when the company's money is helping to feed it. Similarly, was there much incentive to pursue a messy, not clear-cut story about potential child abuse at a college basketball program fresh off an NCAA championship?

To a certain extent, though, fending off such criticism is like proving a negative.

"To maintain our credibility as journalists, which is an important thing, we need to do this reporting regardless of the business relationships," Doria said.

As the "big dog" in sports media, ESPN expects to get a lot of attention over how it handles stories, Doria said. The network hasn't hidden from openly discussing its role in the stories, which amid criticism of its actions earned the network some praise from media blogger Erik Wemple of The Washington Post.

The Dodd story also indicates ESPN may have more opportunities to test itself on these types of issues. The Sandusky case has triggered a lot more story tips.

"Some of them look like they're valid and worth following up on," Doria said. "Some of them are people calling because it looks like something to do."

RIM: Next-generation phones not out till late 2012 (AP)

TORONTO ? BlackBerry maker Research In Motion Ltd. said Thursday that new phones deemed critical to the company's future will be delayed until late 2012.

Mike Lazaridis, one of the company's co-CEOs, said the BlackBerry 10 phones will need a highly integrated chipset that will not be available until mid-2012, so the company can now expect them to ship late in the year. He disclosed the delay on a conference call with analysts.

Analysts say RIM's future depends on the new software platform. RIM needs to come up with a compelling BlackBerry as U.S. users have moved on to flashier touch-screen phones such as Apple's iPhone and various competing models that run Google's Android software.

Earlier Thursday, RIM said BlackBerry sales will fall sharply in the holiday quarter, providing further evidence that it is struggling to compete. It also has been having a hard time finding a niche in the tablet-computer market, which is dominated by Apple's iPad.

RIM continues to enjoy success overseas, but market researcher NPD Group says RIM's market share of smartphones in the U.S. has declined from 44 percent in 2009 to 10 percent this year.

The company's stock fell 7 percent in extended trading Thursday.

The delay in BlackBerry 10 phones is the latest in a series of setbacks for the once-iconic Canadian company. Its PlayBook tablet computer hasn't been selling well, forcing the company to sell them at a deep discount. A widespread outage frustrated tens of millions of BlackBerry users in October. RIM fired two executives after their drunken rowdiness forced the diversion of an Air Canada flight. The head of its operations in Indonesia faces charges related to a stampede at a recent promotional sale where dozens of consumers were injured.

RIM said its net income sank 71 percent as revenue fell and the company took a large accounting charge on the PlayBook, which uses the same operating software that RIM's new phones will use.

"We ask for your patience and confidence," Lazaridis said.

RIM earned $265 million, or 51 cents per share, for its fiscal third quarter that ended Nov. 26. That compares with $911 million, or $1.74 per share, a year ago. The company said revenue fell 6 percent to $5.2 billion. The PlayBook charge was $485 million before taxes.

The company shipped 14.1 million BlackBerry smartphones during the third quarter and 150,000 PlayBook tablets, but its fourth-quarter guidance was what investors focused on because it had warned about the third-quarter results earlier.

Although RIM has said it would sell fewer BlackBerrys in the current quarter, the forecast given Thursday appeared worse than expected.

RIM said it would only ship between 11 million and 12 million BlackBerrys in the fourth quarter compared to 14.8 million in the previous fourth quarter.

RIM also said its fourth-quarter earnings would be in the range of 80 to 95 cents per share on revenue in the range of $4.6 billion to $4.9 billion. Analysts had been expecting earnings of $1.15 a share on revenue of $5.04 billion, according to FactSet.

Peter Misek, an analyst at Jefferies & Co. in New York, said earlier that if RIM reveals that it will ship no more than 12 million BlackBerrys in the current quarter, then the company needs to get its new phones out fast. Otherwise, RIM could lose money in future quarters as it continues to struggle to sell the current, stopgap models.

Misek said late Thursday the BlackBerry 10 phones will now be released three to nine months later than people believed.

BGC Financial analyst Colin Gillis said the guidance was terrible and wondered if it was the start of a collapse.

"If consumers abandon this platform it can happen pretty quickly," Gillis said. "Don't think this is the bottom."

Jim Balsillie, the other co-CEO, said the last few quarters have been among the most challenging times in the company's most recent history. He said executives are working to turn it around, but said it may take time.

"We are not satisfied with the performance of the business in the United States," Balsillie said.

Balsillie said he and Lazaridis have reduced their cash salary to $1 per year, though they will continue to earn stock options and other compensation.

RIM's stock fell $1.15 to a new seven-year low of $13.98 in extended trading Thursday after the results were released.

The stock has lost about 75 percent of its value this year. A company that was worth more than $70 billion a few years ago now has a market value of around $8 billion.

"We recognize our shareholders may feel we've fallen short," Balsillie said

CHAOS IN WASHINGTON: Obama Calls On Congress To Pass Short Term Spending Bill As Negotiations Stall

President Barack Obama's brinkmanship strategy over the payroll tax cut and a bill to fund the government after Friday appears to have fallen apart.

An email from White House Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer sent to reporters Wednesday night calls on congress to shelve the $1 trillion funding measure, saying Obama has "significant concerns" about the bill. Instead, Obama urged Congress to proceed with another short-term continuing resolution ? without which, much of the federal government will shut down early Saturday morning.

Pfeiffer said the current spending bill includes "provisions that would undermine Wall Street reforms, enact extreme social and ideological riders, undercut environmental protections, and threaten the foreign policy prerogatives of the President."

Obama had wanted to tie the funding measure to the payroll tax cut bill, asking Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to hold the spending bill until lawmakers reach a compromise on the vital tax break.

Democratic and Republican lawmakers said Tuesday that the "omnibus" spending bill is done and ready for a vote, but the White House maintains there were always issues with the bill, and that there is no final deal until Obama agrees to it.

Furthering the confusion is the simple fact that congressional leaders can't agree to sit down and negotiate a solution to the crisis. Take this lede from POLITICO's Manu Raju and Jake Sherman:

"Mitch McConnell says Harry Reid should talk to John Boehner. Reid says he wants to talk to Boehner to hash out a compromise on extending the payroll tax holiday and jobless benefits. But Boehner first wants Reid to show his hand by actually passing something."

Indeed, if it weren't for the horrors of the debt ceiling stand-off this summer, this development would be shocking. Instead, it appears to be the new normal: House and Senate leaders squabble with the White House and each other to pass legislation they both agree is vital.

Boehner appears ready to pass the spending bill unamended on Friday, just hours before the shutdown deadline ? and force Democrats to take it or leave it. His office has yet to respond to the White House's call for a short-term bill to allow time to reopen negotiations.

On the payroll tax cut, Democrats have yet to scrap the millionaire's surtax that Republicans say has got to go, and the GOP is still pushing the Keystone XL pipeline issue that Obama wants off the table.

With 50 hours left, the government is just beginning to prepare for a shutdown, and lawmakers are only getting widening the gaps between them.

93% Drive

Driver: If I drive for you, you give me a time and a place. I give you a five-minute window, anything happens in that five minutes and I'm yours no matter what.I tend to spend most of my time during a film figuring out what is flawed about it, but every once in a while, I am graced with a film where I can sit down and enjoy every minute of it. That's exactly what I got from Drive, a hyper-violent, gruesome, tense, and throughly entertaining film throughout. Not only was it supremely entertaining, it is also wholly original; as well as a masterful lead from indie-guru Ryan Gosling, stylish direction from Nicolas Winding Refn, who all contribute to making Drive one of the best films of the year. Ryan Gosling stars as Driver, who spends his days as a Hollywood stunt driver and a worker and a car repair shop. By night, Driver drives (yep, there will be probably hundreds of uses of the word "drive" in this review) criminals to and from their heist. When a heist involving his neighbors husband who was recently released from prison goes wrong, and the criminals find out who Driver really is, it's time for him to take charge of the situation and to do whatever it takes to get payback and stay alive. I guess the first thing I'll talk about is the fact that it in no way is an action film. It is a tense drama that features some strong violence. There are some defining action moments, but this is mostly a slow paced thriller, which was definitely a brilliant aspect pertaining to the film's style. The first hour or so consists only of strong character development, and a lot of leading up to the last forty minutes where a lot of mindless yet awesome action occurs. The action sequences are arranged quite well. The whole film itself has sort of an art house feel to it, and this action seems pretty gritty, and pretty realistic if I may say. Don't mistake this for another Fast and Furious film, this is its own movie, and the action here is something [similar] to what would really happen in a situation like this. The only thing that was over exemplified was the blood, there was a lot of blood. For anyone who enjoys gruesome films, this is right up your alley. Even if you are into superhero movies, this is for you; according to actor Ryan Gosling (found HERE).Speaking of Ryan Gosling, 2011 seems to be the year of Gosling, as he's starred in the hit romantic comedy Crazy, Stupid, Love (my review can be found HERE), and the upcoming Clooney film The Ides of March. He was also in Blue Valentine, The Notebook, and Lars and the Real Girl. Drive is his best film so far. Even judging by the original trailer, you could tell Gosling would be great. He was spectacular. Seeing Gosling's character strolling down the street, blood stains all over his super-cool Scorpion Jacket is a pleasure to watch. The supporting cast are also definitely great too. I'll start with my favorite of them; Albert Brooks, who switched over from his usual good guy character to a bad-ass man-in-charge, and Brooks' performance is masterful, scary, and sheds some blood. Hellboy star Ron Perlman is also a favorite of mine in this, and is a great addition to an already well-picked cast. The film featured other great performances from Bryan Cranston, Oscar Isaac, Christina Hendricks, and Carey Mulligan. The film gets it's amazingly original arthouse style due to the fantastic direction from acclaimed Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn (Bronson, Valhalla Rising, and another Ryan Gosling film Only God Forgives). Nicolas's directing style is wholly unique, and wholly original, as well as wholly entertaining, and wholly beautiful. What I love the most about his directing style, as far as indie films go, was not only his lack of complexity (I mean that in a good way), but his arthouse style was very unique. I was absolutely mesmerized by it; it is almost impossible to describe, you have to see it to believe it.Drive is one of the best experiences I've had watching a film. It's always good when a movie ends, and you realize that it was flawless (as well as giving it a huge round of applause, as my theater did). Drive is a very fun, gory, gruesome, but has a sense of tense drama moments (which basically consists of the entire first hour until the hyper-violent era of the film occurs), as well as a mesmerizing performance from Ryan Gosling, and great direction from Nicolas Winding Refn, who all make this film that is destined to become a classic.Driver: When you get your money, his debt's paid. He's out for good and you never go near his family again. You understand?

Richard Peña: Cinematic Renaissance in Spanish Film

Over the twenty years of its existence, New York City's annual Spanish Cinema Now series has come to serve as the American showcase for vibrant, thought-provoking films in Spanish cinema. A new generation of comic filmmakers first met American audiences with our longest-running series at Film Society of Lincoln Center: Alex de la Iglesias, Santiago Segura, Ventura Pons, and Daniel Sanchez Arevalo, among others. Female directors, such as Iciar Bolain, Gracia Querejta, Helena Taberna and Isabel Coixet, have been prominently featured, as have the new approaches to classic genres as seen in the films of Nacho Vigalondo, Jaume Balaguer, and Javier Gutierrez. Spanish Cinema Now has also provided the occasion for retrospective homages to artists ranging from directors Carlos Saura, Victor Erice and Manuel Gutierrez Aragon to actors such as Javier Bardem and Javier Camera.

Back in the Eighties, before I was working at Lincoln Center, I would come to New York from Chicago (where I was living) to attend Spanish film week organized by the Spanish Ministry of Culture. My good friend, Carmelo Romero, head of international film promotion for the Ministry in those years, organized these shows, which took place in various cinemas around town that had been rented for the occasion. After I got my Lincoln Center job, I told Carmelo that as soon as our new cinema--a place that was to be called the Walter Reade Theater--would be up and running, I'd be delighted to host the Spanish film week. We made a date to have our first collaboration in the fall of 1989, just after the Walter Reade was scheduled to open (September 1989).

New York building projects being what they are, the Walter Reade didn't open in fact until December 1991, but every time I saw Carmelo I'd renew my promise. Finally, after some negotiation, we agreed on October 1992, to be the launch of our first series. Dramatically titled "Out of the Ashes," this first Lincoln Center Spanish show proved a great success, introducing audiences to films such as Bogas Luna's JAMON JAMON (as well as to Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem in that film), and Carlos Saura's marvelous dance film SEVILLANAS. Encouraged, we decided we'd repeat our collaboration the next year, only we'd move the series into early December, and it's remained there ever since.

Together, Spanish cinema and the Film Society have taken quite a journey. When the series began in 1992, Spanish cinema was at a particularly low point: production was down to 40 films a year (down from highs of almost 200 in the Seventies), and Spanish cinema could not even claim ten percent of its domestic box office. The older, established generation of filmmakers had perhaps lost touch with Spanish audiences, especially younger audiences; raised in the shadow of Franco, this generation of filmmakers specialized in a somewhat closed, allegorical cinema, used as it was to hiding messages and themes from the censors. Yet the new generation was all about openness, about putting it out there, and there was no greater symbol of this than the one Spanish filmmaker who continued to enjoy growing international success in these years: Pedro Almod?var, who once went so far as to claim that he made films "as if Franco had never existed."

In the twenty years since the founding of Spanish Cinema Now (Film Society of Lincoln Center's longest-running series), Spanish Cinema has continued to struggle to both maintain its domestic box office as well as to establish expanded markets around the world, yet there can be little doubt of its importance today--both as a source for talented directors and actors, as well as one of the most aesthetically provocative cinema anywhere.

We're proud to be a small part of this cinematic renaissance, and are grateful to Spanish cinema for all the pleasure it continues to give our audiences.

Film Society of Lincoln Center's Spanish Cinema Now series is currently celebrating 20 years with an exciting lineup of films, shorts, documentaries and a tribute to the late great director Luis Garc?a Berlanga, all currently playing at Walter Reade Theater until December 22. Visit www.filmlinc.com for schedule, tickets and information.
